Cabinet Hinges - Specifying and Sizing
Cabinet hinges are available in a wide variety of styles, finishes and functions. For a new cabinet
that is being built from scratch, the choices are almost endless. However, for an existing cabinet,
your choices are always limited to the hinges that fit the style of cabinet door you have.
The vast majority of cabinet doors fit in one of two ways, partially inset or overlay. As you can see
in the left side of the graphic below, an inset door has some of the door thickness sitting inside of
the cabinet frame opening when the door is closed. By far the most common amount of inset is
3/8". This is because typical cabinet doors are 3/4" thick and its just convenient to make the door
such that one-half of its thickness, or 3/8", is inset when the door is closed. To determine if you
have inset door hinges, open a cabinet door and look along the edge that the door hinges mount to.
It will have a notch, or step, in it as seen in the graphic. Measure the depth of the inset and you’ll
know what hinges you need.
