Installing Bath Accessories
To install bath accessories you will need a 36" level, locking tape measure, drill, 3/32" & 5/16" drill bits, hammer, straight and phillips bit screwdrivers and a pencil. Safety glasses are strongly recommended.
The first thing to determine when installing bath accessories is where you're going to put them. You want to be careful about selecting your locations because you're going to be making some big holes in the walls to mount them and you don't want to have to patch those holes if you decide to move your bath accessories later. Put the accessories where they are easy to reach but will clear all of the cabinet drawers and doors, entry door and shower door. Also, don't forget that you will be drilling into the walls where these items will be mounted, so it's best not to try and mount them on any wall where there might be plumbing lines; lest you drill right into a water line! As a general rule, any wall that has a water fixture, be it a shower head, faucet or toilet hook up has water lines running in it and should be avoided. If you feel that you have to mount something on one of these walls, make sure that any holes you drill are not on the same vertical line as the fixture. The water lines will usually run straight up and down from the fixture. Staying away from this vertical line will usually keep you safe, but is by no means a guarantee!
Once you have determined the approximate locations of your accessories, make a small mark on the wall where you want the centers of the accessories to be. For anything with two mounting brackets, such as a towel bar, this will be the approximate center point of the entire assembly. For a towel hoop, soap dish or robe hook, that has just one mounting bracket, this will be the center of the bracket. For towel hoops and bars, make sure to adjust this mark for how far the towel will hang down once everything is finished.
Each bath accessory will come with a mounting bracket and it will vary as to whether the bracket goes vertically or horizontally. Read the instructions that came with the item to determine which. Then, for pieces that require only one mounting bracket, simply place the bracket on the wall, in the required horiziontal or vertical orientation, with the center of the bracket covering the mark you just made. Eyeball the horizontal or vertical alignment of the bracket(close is ok, you don't need the level here). Now, make a small mark on the wall in the center of each mounting hole or slot.
